Seeking gold at Camp Tawonga
Off the futuristic stagecoaches they climbed and with that the 2010 program season was underway at Camp Tawonga with the Gold Rush program.
The program brings students from Jewish day schools across the greater Bay Area to camp to simulate life in the fictional 1851 community of Hangtown. Using the Tawonga mission and values of teaching children independence, self-reliance, teamwork and providing a safe, spiritual space, participants cook their own meals, pan for gold, gamble in the saloon, dance in the dance hall and learne old-fashioned lessons the greenhorns. By the end of the "Gold Rush," campers learn what it takes to become a certified sourdough and leave with a gold pan full of memories.
